How to calculate a pay raise

To calculate a raise by percentage, multiply your current pay by the raise percentage, then add it to your current pay:

New pay = current pay × (1 + raise % ÷ 100)

Example. A 5% raise on a $60,000 salary adds $60,000 × 0.05 = $3,000, for a new salary of $63,000. To find the percentage instead, divide the increase by your old pay: ($63,000 − $60,000) ÷ $60,000 × 100 = 5%.

What is a typical pay raise?

In the US, annual merit raises commonly land around 3-5%, broadly tracking inflation. Promotions and external job moves usually beat that, often 10-20% or more. If your raise trails inflation, your real (purchasing-power) pay has effectively fallen — worth keeping in mind when you negotiate.

How do I calculate a pay raise by percentage?

How do I work out what percentage raise I got?

What is a good annual pay raise?

A typical merit raise in the US runs about 3-5% per year, roughly in line with or slightly above inflation. A promotion or a job change often brings a larger jump of 10-20% or more. What counts as "good" depends on your role, performance and cost-of-living changes.

Does this work for hourly raises too?

Yes. Choose "Per hour" and enter your hourly rate. A raise from $20 to $21 per hour is a 5% increase, the same math as a salary raise — just on a smaller number.

Can I use this as a pay cut calculator?

Yes. Enter a negative percentage (like -10) or a new pay that is lower than your current pay, and the calculator shows the decrease and the resulting lower pay.

Is the new pay before or after tax?

The result is gross (pre-tax) pay. Your take-home increase will be smaller once federal, state and FICA taxes apply to the higher amount.
